3. Minoru Suzuki
Can you imagine a Japanese wrestler holding the IWGP United States title? Only four men have held the gold since it’s inception in July of 2017. All of these men are gaijin (foreign wrestlers). It’s time to change that, if you ask me. How about we introduce a surprise challenger to the table in Minoru Suzuki?
“Murder Grandpa” is 50 years old and a legend in the sport of Japanese wrestling. The leader of “Suzuki Gun” usually isn’t as interested in championships, because inflicting pain is more of his niche – titles are often secondary. While he was recently the IWGP Intercontinental champion this spring, Suzuki would pose a tremendous threat to Cody’s U.S. title.
“Suzuki Gun” stablemates Zach Sabre Jr. and current IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru are slated to compete in championship matches on the Wrestle Kingdom card. This frees Suzuki up to choose a target of his own. How fantastic would a Suzuki-Cody Championship match be?
Think about this, two of the best heels in the company mixing it up for a freshly-minted prize. Suzuki’s shoot style vs. Cody’s enigmatic persona would be quite a contrast of styles and would make for an extremely entertaining bout on NJPW’s grandest stage. While this might be a long-shot, it could also prove to be a show stealer if New Japan executes it.
