WWE: Why Becky Lynch vs Ronda Rousey Needs To Happen at WrestleMania

While Becky Lynch will not face Ronda Rousey this Sunday at Survivor Series, here’s why she needs to be Rousey’s opponent at WWE WrestleMania 35.

This past Monday, the WWE SmackDown women’s locker room invaded Raw to attack their women’s division. The segment was highlighted by the SmackDown Women’s Champion receiving a broken nose following a punch from Nia Jax. As unforgettable of an image a cocky and defiant Becky Lynch jaw jacking the Raw locker room with blood pouring down her face was, Lynch now needs time to heal her injuries, meaning she’ll be missing Survivor Series.

Thankfully, the injury isn’t serious enough to have Lynch stripped of her title, but it will deprive us of seeing her wrestle the Raw Women’s Champion at Survivor Series. Interestingly enough, Lynch named her frenemy Charlotte Flair as her replacement to take on Rousey this Sunday.

That is particularly interesting because for months now, we have been hearing rumors about WWE saving Flair vs Rousey for an upcoming WrestleMania match, possibly in the main event of the show. Now, they’re giving it away at Survivor Series with five days notice.

What gives? If these rumors are to be believed, what could possibly be the WrestleMania 35 main event now? And what happens to Rousey vs Lynch now as a storyline without a resolution?

All of these questions point to one answer: Give Rousey and Lynch the main event of WrestleMania 35.

We would like to assume that maybe that’s already in the plans now. After all – again, if rumors are to be believed – WWE couldn’t possibly dump their original WM 35 main event on a Survivor Series show without a backup in mind, right? I would like to think Lynch vs Rousey is that backup, but of course, it might not. I think it should.

While the brand split for PPVs has been effectively over since early this year, the only PPVs where Raw and SmackDown can realistically square off are Survivor Series (hence the show’s theme), Royal Rumble (mostly due to both brands being represented in the Royal Rumble match), and at WrestleMania. I say ‘Mania, because that’s where dream matches happen, regardless of brands. Our most recent example was when Raw’s Asuka took on SmackDown’s Charlotte Flair at this past Mania.

It seems as though between the Rumble and ‘Mania, the most likely place where Rousey vs Lynch could happen is WrestleMania, and if that is the case, it absolutely has to be in the main event. It doesn’t matter if no title is on the line, one of their titles are on the line, or both titles are on the line. It just needs to happen in the main event of WrestleMania.

Think about some of the best, most talked about WrestleMania main events of old. Andre vs Hogan. Austin vs Rock. Triple H vs Batista. The main event – more often than not – features the two most over wrestling personalities of the year. In some cases, the most hated heel vs. the most beloved babyface. However, with most characters being in the gray nowadays (a la Becky Lynch), let’s just go with the “most over personalities” category.

If we go by that logic, Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch have undoubtedly overtaken that throne. Both women are more over than pretty much everyone else on the roster, regardless of gender, and an argument can be made for Lynch being the most over wrestler on the roster right now. In many respects, it makes more sense to put Rousey vs Lynch in the main event of WrestleMania than at Survivor Series.

Obviously, we’re not glad Becky Lynch is injured, but a silver lining is that Rousey vs. Lynch has a greater chance of happening at Mania. If Flair vs Rousey was really the original plan, we can imagine a huge uproar happening against the match due to fans wishing Lynch was in Flair’s place. We can already imagine hearing the “Becky! Becky! Becky!” chants.

The first ever women’s main event at WrestleMania deserves the best, and in light of recent events, WrestleMania 35 might just get it.
