A Face Dolph Ziggler Is Exactly What WWE Raw Needs Right Now
By Brett Grega
On the December 3rd episode of Monday Night Raw, Dolph Ziggler handed Drew McIntyre his first loss on the main roster in WWE. Find out why this shocking win should be the spark that ignites a face turn for ‘The Showoff’.
The December 3rd WWE Monday Night Raw gave us one of the more intriguing storyline developments in recent weeks when Drew McIntyre decided to end his partnership with Dolph Ziggler in rather spectacular fashion.
‘The Scottish Psychopath’ derided everything about Ziggler, mocking him for not realizing that he had been using him to advance his own solo aspirations in WWE.
This, naturally, promoted Ziggler to attack McIntyre. What came next was a thrilling match between the two former partners that culminated in a surprise victory for Ziggler with a little help from Finn Balor.
While this segment could easily end up being just a self-contained wrinkle in the developing feud between Balor and McIntyre, I believe this match might be the set-up for a much needed new storyline on Raw.
I think we’re in for a Dolph Ziggler face turn.
While that statement in of itself may no longer sound very exciting, Ziggler is starting to feel like The Big Show at this point in his career with all the face and heel turns after all, but this potential face run could be the best push in years for ‘The Showoff’.
Right now, I would argue the role of main-event babyface on Raw is largely open at the moment. With Braun Strowman injured and most of the rest of the upper mid-card floundering under the weight of stale rivalries, Ziggler as a face could be in a unique position.
Ziggler would immediately have one of the hottest heels in WWE to feud with in Drew McIntyre. Besides perhaps Dean Ambrose, McIntyre is currently Raw’s top villain. Ziggler and McIntyre could easily sustain a compelling feud on the road to the Royal Rumble considering the level McIntyre’s been running at as of late.
Additionally, it’s not like we don’t know whether or not Dolph Ziggler can’t be a great face either. Although I feel its oftentimes forgotten, there was once a time when Ziggler was practically the hottest babyface in WWE. His work as a face in 2014, before and after his standout performance in Survivor Series that year, arguably remains as one of the best runs we’ve seen in WWE in recent years.
A feud that saw Ziggler channel that run, while also blazing a new path for his character away from the disgruntled worker shtick he’s been stuck with for far too long, could easily become one of the best storylines on a Raw show currently lacking much intrigue and excitement.
More importantly perhaps, it could give WWE a way to finally shift the focus of Raw’s major segments away from the Baron Corbin tyrannical general manager storyline that’s been taking up far too much space on the show lately.
Hopefully, this recent win over Drew McIntyre means it won’t be long before we get to see a fresh and rejuvenated babyface Dolph Ziggler exciting WWE crowds once again on Monday nights.
