Johnny Gargano VS Candice LeRae

Oh, Candice. Talk about a character derailment. Since her NXT debut, our favorite Tough Cupcake has struggled to become relevant by her own merits under the weight of the ever-oppressive Johnny Gargano storyline. Despite some promising early matches, LeRae has been reduced to taking bumps to prove how evil Ciampa is instead of getting the chance to focus on her own career.

The most frustrating part is that LeRae has been marooned in a storyline where she can’t actually do anything in a wrestling ring, thanks to WWE’s dim view of intergender combat. This sucks because before she signed with NXT, LeRae was arguably one of the most popular intergender wrestlers in the world. As a tag-team fixture with Joey Ryan she crushed male opponents on a regular basis, including the Young Bucks and Kevin Owens.

We know Candice could kick some ass if given the opportunity. So why not give it to her?

While the easy story hook here would be LeRae fighting Ciampa on behalf of Gargano, I’d like to see it go in a different direction. LeRae’s mounting frustration with Gargano’s spiral and the way it has affected her career has been a quiet but compelling background element to the Ciampa/Gargano feud.

Gargano’s recent change in character – and Ciampa’s apparent happiness about it -seems like it should be a bridge too far for LeRae. It makes sense for her to take her husband on in the ring and prove that good triumphs over awkward Venom references.

There’s also every reason to believe it would be a killer match. LeRae and Gargano tagged back in the day, but they also often wrestled each other, and their chemistry and familiarity with each other created some truly memorable showdowns at promotions like AIW.

Let LeRae revert back to her sunny babyface persona, and let her resolve to bring Gargano back to the light by any means necessary. This is your Brooklyn TakeOver main event, Regal. Don’t blow it.
