Shelton Benjamin

This one is a bit outside the box, but Shelton Benjamin doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his consistency in the wrestling business. Benjamin hasn’t won a championship in his second stint on the main roster, though he came agonizingly close as Chad Gable’s partner in their feud with The Usos, who are widely recognized as WWE’s best tag team.

Though Benjamin receives a heap of praise for his athletic ability, the veteran performer’s technical wrestling and ability to work as a throwback heel have been even more impressive. Benjamin hasn’t been on television in some time (Oct. 9 against AJ Styles, to be precise), and this has confused some fans, since we haven’t heard anything about a potential injury.

After Gable left for Raw, winning another tag team championship but with Bobby Roode as his partner, a disgruntled Benjamin turned heel and started focusing his attention on winning a championship. He put on some quality singles matches, but nothing came of it.

Benjamin seems like a guy who could take out his frustrations on a younger star, and Ali would be that guy. Mustafa Ali’s high-flying ability, resiliency, and meteoric rise as one of WWE’s biggest breakout stars in 2018 could upset Benjamin, who sees Ali as a threat to his job security. If Benjamin gets back on SmackDown Live, the story writes itself, and they could produce a hidden gem of a match that boosts both wrestlers afterwards.
