Four Horsewomen Versus Four Horsewomen
Come January Ronda Rousey will have been a full-time member of the WWE roster for about a year. In that time she has taken the women’s division to new heights and managed to get a whole lot more eyes on the WWE product thanks to her famed success in the MMA world. Ronda’s closing out 2018 as the Raw Women’s Champion and has been one of the most talked about WWE Superstars of the year, so it’s safe to say this year’s been pretty good for the Baddest Woman on the Planet.
But Rousey’s Four Horsewomen compatriots have been killing it in their own right down in NXT. Shayna Baszler is the only two-time NXT Women’s Champion in history and Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir, while just getting started on television, already have the name value to take them far in the business. Specifically, Duke reportedly made a great early impression on the company and Shafir shows obvious charisma in front of the camera.
In their brief on-screen association with Baszler, Duke and Shafir have shown promise and it couldn’t have happened at a better time. This officially brings all of the MMA Four Horsewomen to WWE at the dawn of a new era when the company is looking to bring up plenty of fresh faces from NXT to the main roster. The women’s roster in NXT is certainly stacked enough to handle losing these three, especially if we consider the breadth of talent we saw competing in this year’s Mae Young Classic (please sign Hiroyo Matsumoto, WWE).
With the seeds already well planted for a feud between Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch heading into WrestleMania season, all that’s left is to call up Baszler, Shafir and Duke, then get Bayley and Sasha Banks involved. I’m calling it now: in 2019 we’ve got ourselves a showdown between the Four Horsewomen of MMA and the Four Horsewomen of WWE.
It seems like we’re saying this every year now, but 2018 really was a momentous year for women’s wrestling. Sure, we got plenty of firsts, such as the first all women’s pay-per-view Evolution and the first women’s TLC and Elimination Chamber matches. But the true story as the year comes to a close is that the female WWE Superstars appeared to become the company’s biggest attraction. All over the wrestling world people are talking about what barriers the women of the ring are breaking, and though it will be no easy feat I think they’ll outdo themselves in 2019.
