4. Royal Rumble

The Royal Rumble match is arguably the most exciting match in the WWE on a yearly basis.  This match has helped shape the WWE over the past three or so decades and the pay-per-view signifies the start of the road to WrestleMania.

Royal Rumble 2018 was a big night on several fronts, the biggest being the fact that it would introduce the first-ever all-women’s Royal Rumble match.  Outside of the two rumble matches, the rest of the card featured a few other key battles as well, such as the night’s opening match pitting AJ Styles against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in a handicap match with Styles’ WWE Championship on the line.  This turned out to be a very good match that saw Styles retain.

The Usos vs. Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship was pretty good, despite The Usos winning the first two falls of a potential three-fall match.  The men’s Royal Rumble match followed and it would go down as arguably one of the best Royal Rumble matches in history with an incredible hour or so.  The finish that saw Shinsuke Nakamura eliminate Roman Reigns to earn the right to go to WrestleMania was a long time coming.

The Bar winning the Raw Tag Team Championship by defeating Seth Rollins and the injured Jason Jordan was just OK.  Brock Lesnar’s Universal Championship defense against Braun Strowman and Kane was solid in its own right.  The women’s Royal Rumble match saw faces of the past, present, and future converge into what ended up as a great debut match.  Asuka’s winning elimination over Nikki Bella was awesome, as was Ronda Rousey’s post-match debut.

This pay-per-view had a little bit of everything and it set the bar high for WWE pay-per-views in 2018.
