6. May 14 Raw vs. Kevin Owens IC Title Open Challenge

Finn Balor and Seth Rollins had plenty of Universal Championship history on Raw dating back to 2016, and the same can be said for Rollins and Kevin Owens, who have just as remarkable chemistry with each other. Who can forget their brutal battle inside of Hell in a Cell two years ago, when Rollins took Owens to the absolute limit before Chris Jericho interjected himself into the match to save his best friend?

Owens and Rollins met again in an Intercontinental Championship “Open Challenge” match in mid-May, and while it wasn’t the “fresh” matchup fans initially hoped for, even the most hard-to-please members of the WWE Universe were on the edge of their seats by the time this match reached its closing sequences.

They pulled out all the stops in what was another hard-hitting, violent matchup between these two big-name superstars. You wouldn’t have been able to tell that Rollins was fighting off jet lag and travel fatigue with the way he was flying around, nailing suicide dives, and absorbing heavy offense from a determined Owens.

The fact that this “hidden gem” match isn’t in Rollins’s top five for the year is a testament to the year he had inside the squared circle.

5. April 30 Raw vs. Finn Balor For The IC Title

For the third time in April, Finn Balor and Seth Rollins had a legitimate four-star match when sharing the same ring, and I’d like to know if that’s ever been done by a superstar in the history of this promotion. It’s rare to find two wrestlers who are capable of building off of the same base to produce different, engaging stories in the ring on weekly television within the same month, but Balor and Rollins are a special breed.

Unlike their match to start April, this encounter had a title on the line, because Rollins defeated Balor and The Miz to capture the so-called “worker’s” title. And to honor the history of the championship, these two elite superstars put on another show, complete with an out-of-nowhere finish.

It’s hard to find two superstars who innately understand the other’s movements so well, and this was an absolute clinic that told the right story to close this early-2018 rivalry.
