3. Shane McMahon and The Miz defeat The Colons in their first tag team match against an established WWE tag team.
WWE is no stranger to oddball tag team pairings. From Team Hell No to The Rock ‘n’ Sock connection, we’ve seen almost too many of those pairings to name over the course of the company’s history.
However, if you had told me at the beginning of 2018 that Shane McMahon would be a tag team title contender with The Miz, I still would have balked.
Over the next few weeks and months, it will be interesting to see how this unlikely story unfolds. A tag team title reign doesn’t seem out of the picture, but neither does a heel turn from one of the two partners, which I have suspected could be the case in the recent past.
Either way, that’s far off in the future for McMahon and Miz. First, this team has to start somewhere, and I bet that somewhere is at the bottom rung of the SmackDown tag team division.
This week, I expect we will see the official debut of The Miz and Shane McMahon’s new team against low-level opponents. Not as low-level as the local talent they’ve had mixed results against in recent weeks, but potentially a team like The Colons who oftentimes don’t make it on to SmackDown at all.
After beating The Colons, maybe then we will see the team move on to some real competition. While I don’t see them challenging a top-tier tag team that’s consistently pushed like The New Day any time soon, perhaps a rivalry with a mid-card team like SAnitY could be in the cards heading into The Royal Rumble after this week.
Speaking of The New Day though, they have a lot on their plates this week as well, considering they are hosting a New Year’s celebration that has a high potential for fireworks, so to speak.
