Becky Lynch’s name has long been written in pen on the WWE WrestleMania 35 lineup card as Ronda Rousey’s opponent, and the two will almost certainly main event the “Show of Shows”. However, it seems more and more like Charlotte Flair could find herself in that main event spot, too.
Ever since the build-up to the WWE SummerSlam Triple Threat match between Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and then-SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella, Becky and Charlotte have been inseparable on the screen. They traded great match after great match for the prestigious SmackDown Women’s Title, before Becky finally outlasted her in a Last Woman Standing match at Evolution, which was inarguably the main roster’s best match of 2018.
Since that match at Evolution, Becky lost the SmackDown Women’s Championship to Asuka at TLC, as both Charlotte and Becky were pushed off the ladder by a vengeful Ronda Rousey, who had absorbed massive beatings from the two in the month of November.
Because Charlotte has been so involved in this storyline between Becky and Ronda, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer News reports that Vince McMahon agrees with the arguments that Charlotte has earned being a part of this match. This news comes with a hat tip to IWNerd.com.
Though Charlotte vs. Ronda was initially penciled in as the main event of WrestleMania 35 following ‘Mania 34, Becky vs. Ronda became the odds-on option following the tremendous build to Survivor Series and Lynch’s inability to compete in the match due to a reported concussion.
The rumors of Charlotte being involved in a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania 35 aren’t new, but this latest report from Meltzer only strengthens that speculation heading into the Royal Rumble Pay Per View, where Becky will face Asuka for the SmackDown Women’s Championship after defeating Carmella and Charlotte in a Triple Threat No. 1 Contender’s match.
It’s possible for Becky to win, Sasha Banks to upset Rousey, the current Raw Women’s Champion, via help from a fellow member of the Four Horsewomen (perhaps Becky herself), and Charlotte to win the Royal Rumble to set up this Triple Threat match. The likelihood of Rousey losing before facing Becky at WrestleMania is almost zero, but the “almost” is always the word hanging out in the open in WWE; you just never know what’s going to happen.
Plenty of WWE fans are tired of Charlotte being inserted in main event matches, particularly those involving Becky Lynch, but she absolutely delivers every time she’s out there. Charlotte shines on the biggest stages and enjoyed a fantastic 2018, so while it wouldn’t necessarily be a popular decision to have her in the match, the logic behind the decision would have to be respected.
