WWE: We Would Love to See the Return of LayCool

We are just over a week away from the Royal Rumble, and with the Royal Rumble Match comes the opportunity for plenty of returning Superstars. We are eager to see who makes surprise appearances during both the men’s and women’s Rumble matches. In the latter’s case, we would especially like to see the return of a certain dastardly duo known as LayCool.

In light of WWE’s latest title reveal for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles, former Women’s and Divas Champion Michelle McCool would take to Twitter saying that as long as WWE asked and Layla El – another former champion – was interested, she’d love to bring back LayCool to challenge for the titles.

Layla would respond saying that she’d be interested in a return to the ring as long as the WWE Universe wants to see her.

On behalf of the WWE Universe, I think we would all love to see LayCool step into the ring at least one last time.

When Layla first aligned herself with Michelle McCool, the duo immediately received some unfair comparisons to The Beautiful People’s work on TNA Impact. As time went on and LayCool were able to step outside of pre-conceived notions about their gimmick, fans slowly started to see some merit in the duo.

Of course, not all of their segments were perfect and some have aged even worse with time – here’s looking at you, Piggy James angle – but for the most part, LayCool were excellent. They may not have kickstarted the Mean Girls wrestling trope, but they’re definitely looked at as a pinnacle point that helped define the gimmick. Many similar duos – such as The IIconics – either draw comparisons to LayCool or are directly inspired by them. That goes to show the kind of impact they had in WWE.

At a time when the Divas division was muddling, which is a generous way to put it, LayCool were a consistent highlight as both wrestlers and characters.

The duo had a solid two year run until the two split up following WrestleMania 27. After losing a Loser Leaves Town match against Layla at Extreme Rules, McCool would walk away from the business altogether and retire. After giving WWE a few more years of her time, Layla would follow McCool into retirement in 2015.

2018 saw McCool make some one night only appearances in battle royals for Royal Rumble and Evolution. While Layla has yet to return to the ring, she’s at least left the door to that possibly open now. Hopefully, she decides to exit through that door with McCool by her side.

As mentioned, 2009-2011 wasn’t a great time period for women’s wrestling in WWE, but LayCool still flourished. Imagining LayCool in this era where women’s wrestling is at its peak is too enticing to pass up. Not only because they’d fit right in, but we’d love to see them challenge for the newly introduced Women’s Tag Team Titles.

Since there weren’t any such titles for LayCool to win back in the day, the duo had to settle on being co-Women’s Champions. It seems almost like their overdo rite of passage to get at least one Women’s Tag Title match. Heck, we’ll even settle on seeing the two briefly team up during a battle royal.

We just want to see a LayCool reunion happen. For all the two contributed to WWE together, it seems only fitting to see them close out their story together for one last hurrah in the sun while women’s wrestling is the hottest thing going.
