WWE Fastlane 2019 will have a trio of matches that could main event the show, but here’s why Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair should be the closer.
For months, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair have been the co-authors of the best rivalry in WWE, and they may have their final singles match together for some time when they both square off at WWE Fastlane 2019. The stakes are high, because even though a title isn’t on the line, Becky will be removed from the main event of WrestleMania 35 if she loses to The Queen.
Becky and Charlotte’s last match together came at TLC last year, when Asuka grabbed Becky’s SmackDown Women’s Championship after decisive interference from Ronda Rousey. The current Raw Women’s Champion’s actions set in motion a story that will culminate at WrestleMania, most likely with Becky having her hand raised at long last.
But first, the 2019 Women’s Royal Rumble winner must defeat Charlotte at Fastlane. Though Becky has defeated Charlotte over and over again in high-stakes matches, including an all-time classic Last Woman Standing match at Evolution last year, there’s still some uncertainty around this match. In all honesty, this has to be Becky’s next big moment, but given all the twists and turns in this storyline, it’s so hard to take anything for granted.
This makes Charlotte vs. Becky intriguing enough to main event, because it certainly has enough stakes to main event; this match is essentially for Becky’s Rumble win, since a loss would remove her from the WrestleMania Triple Threat. And with the threat of Rousey intervening again, Becky vs. Charlotte has that added “What if?” factor.
That said, the biggest reason why Becky vs. Charlotte goes beyond the stakes, Rousey’s potential involvement, or the uncertainty provided by this storyline. No, it’s the fact that Becky and Charlotte are iconic rivals on the level of Rock and Austin. These two have torn down the house all over this planet (literally), and they were meant to fight forever. They always find a way to add new layers to the story they are telling in the ring, and with all the emotions that have been boiling since Becky’s Rumble win after their one-on-one showdown, I’m sure their Fastlane match in Cleveland will be electric.
The WWE Universe has seen these two women in a main event before, at TLC in December, and they are ready to get behind them in the main event of WrestleMania 35 with Rousey. So why not have them go at it in the main event of Fastlane?
Charlotte and Becky have been established as two of WWE’s biggest players, and while The Shield’s reunion match and the WWE Championship match between dream opponents Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens would also be main event-worthy, there’s something special about Becky vs. Charlotte as a rivalry that nobody else on the roster can touch right now. Just refer back to their matches at Hell in a Cell and Evolution, as well as their final moments in the Rumble, as prime examples of why they are WWE’s best rivals today.
