Drew McIntyre

While facing John Cena would be a callback to a big match in Roman’s past, we could see Reigns take on a younger competitor that he’s never faced one on one. Drew McIntyre has been a dominant force since moving to the main roster in April of 2017, including a run as Raw Tag Team Champion along with Dolph Ziggler. During that run, we saw the first glimpses of McIntyre and Reigns squaring off.

Aside from briefly crossing paths in tag team action or in chaotic brawls involving The Shield, Roman Reigns has only really faced Drew McIntyre one time. On July 16, 2018, we saw Reigns take on Finn Balor and Drew McIntyre in a triple threat match. The winner advanced to face Bobby Lashley, who won his own triple threat. The winner of that final match earned the right to face Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.

In this collision, we saw some of McIntyre’s craftiness and power on display, but ultimately is was Roman Reigns who came out victorious. A well-timed Spear to Finn Balor allowed Reigns to pick up the win, and McIntyre’s potential opportunity slipped away without him even being pinned. Roman Reigns went on to defeat Bobby Lashley the next week on Raw, and then dethroned Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam to become the new Universal Champion.

Meanwhile, Drew McIntyre was stuck being his buddy Dolph Ziggler’s wingman at SummerSlam instead of being in a championship match himself. McIntyre has been frustrated since losing the Royal Rumble, which The Shield’s own Seth Rollins won. If he chooses to, McIntyre could trace his current struggles back to that loss against Reigns without getting pinned.

It’s the perfect underpinning for a match between them at WrestleMania, and could surely set the stage for the next challenger for the Universal Championship after WrestleMania. McIntyre’s current run is still in its infancy, but he’s a ring veteran in need of a statement to really push him to the next level. Facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 35, even if he were to lose, could help solidify Drew McIntyre as one of the company’s top names moving forward. Also, their match would be fantastic.
