Baron Corbin is Kurt Angle’s WrestleMania opponent and ugh
The WWE Universe got its hopes up for big names like John Cena, Drew McIntyre, Shelton Benjamin, and even Matt Riddle as potential WrestleMania 35 opponents for Kurt Angle, but, instead, they’ll get Baron Corbin as the Olympic gold medalist’s final opponent.
Kurt Angle will have his final match at WrestleMania 35, and the WWE Universe will be ready to give a proper send-off to one of wrestling’s biggest legends. As a shoot and professional wrestler, Angle has been a consummate professional, and the respect he has from wrestling fans is on another level, only surpassed by the respect he has earned from his peers.
On the Mar. 18 episode of Raw, in front of a raucous Chicago crowd, Angle announced his “Farewell” opponent at WrestleMania 35. And as the fans got their hopes up for a “full circle” match between John Cena and Angle or even a dream match between Matt Riddle, who teased a feud as a longshot on Twitter, Angle made his announcement.
Baron Corbin.
His hold foe – the man who caused Angle to lose his GM job and made his life, in his words, a living hell on Raw over the past few months.
It’ll be great to see Corbin get his comeuppance at Angle’s hands at WrestleMania, though, of course, many fans will say that Angle should be putting over a younger wrestler on the way out. Corbin isn’t a popular wrestler among the fans, but he is a former United States Champion and (unsuccessful) Money in the Bank winner and a good heel overall.
That said, the WWE Universe didn’t want to see Corbin vs. Angle at WrestleMania; they wanted to see a bigger retirement match for the Olympic gold medalist. They wanted Cena vs. Angle or Drew McIntyre vs. Angle, though, now, it seems like McIntyre vs. Roman Reigns could be a much better ‘Mania showdown.
When Angle announced Corbin as his opponent, the Chicago crowd booed loudly, and, well, it’s hard to blame them. It’s an unsurprising choice despite their history together on Raw, because it feels like Angle’s retirement match should be against someone bigger or more likely to get the rub from nabbing a win over the WWE legend than Corbin, whose momentum has slowed greatly.
Perhaps WWE will swerve the fans by changing Angle’s opponent, but that remains to be seen. Even though it is a disappointing announcement, Corbin vs. Angle should be a solid match, as both men are good in the ring and have experience facing each other.
