Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano were supposed to square off for the NXT Championship at TakeOver: New York on Apr. 5, but a severe neck injury prevented this, likely, final match between the two superstars from taking place.

Our hearts ache for Tommaso Ciampa, as a collective. Ciampa, who battled back from a torn ACL to create one of the best WWE feuds in recent memory with long-time friend and tag team partner Johnny Gargano, recently suffered a severe neck injury and was removed from the NXT Championship match against Johnny Gargano at TakeOver: New York.

It’s incredibly tough to see Ciampa suffering with such a scary injury, especially after he’s had to overcome so much as an athlete. But we hope he’ll be back stronger than ever, just like he was the first time.

Despite all the heartbreak, Ciampa, who is one of WWE‘s biggest villains in storyline, gave us a touching moment on the morning before TakeOver: New York. Ciampa wished his long-time partner and rival Johnny Gargano the best of luck before the latter’s NXT Title match against Adam Cole – a two out of three falls match.

Bittersweet cuts deep.

I am not ashamed to admit that my eyes got a little misty, especially after seeing Ciampa finish the tweet with a black heart – the nickname he gave himself after returning from an injury to begin his legendary rivalry with Gargano.

That rivalry was supposed to close at TakeOver: New York on WrestleMania Week, one year after the two superstars put together the match of their lives at TakeOver: New Orleans. Their series of matches received widespread acclaim, and while some thought the rivalry dragged on for too long, Gargano’s reunion with Ciampa and baited betrayal in March were reminders that the NXT Universe has always been fully invested in this story.

Next. NXT is using a Slipknot song as its theme now. dark

It’s a story that will be picked up when Ciampa returns from his neck injury, because these two men are inseparable. This tweet shows the special bond these men have, and if Gargano wins the title, it’s good to know that Ciampa will be celebrating his friend’s moment in the sun. And maybe one day, these two will get to have one last match for “Goldy”.
