WrestleMania X: Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels (Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship)
This is without a doubt one of the most influential matches in the history of professional wrestling. Before an electrified Madison Square Garden crowd, Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon completely re-wrote the book on what could be done in a wrestling match.
Michaels was making his return to the company from injury, challenging Razor Ramon for he Intercontinental Championship that he had never actually lost. As such, both Michaels’ belt and Ramon’s belt were to be suspended from the rafters, with the true champion being the man who could retrieve both.
Accompanied by Diesel, Michaels had the obvious advantage going into the match. Indeed, it was not long at all before Diesel got physically involved, clotheslining Ramon on the outside, before being ejected from ringside.
Leaps from the ladder and brutal battering ram strikes were the primary form of combat in the match. The finish saw Michaels tangled in the ropes, helplessly watching as Ramon ascended the ladder and claimed the Intercontinental Championship.
While this match is frequently derided as Shawn Michaels having a match with a ladder, Ramon played his role impeccably well. This is truly an absolute classic that everyone should go out of there way to see.
Honorable Mention: Bret Hart and Owen Hart put on the greatest opening match in WrestleMania history in a bout that, in many ways, has aged even better than the ladder match.
