WrestleMania X-Seven: Edge and Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boyz (TLC Match for the WWE Tag Team Championships)
Not only did Edge and Christian, the Dudley Boyz, and the Hardy Boyz manage to steal the show at two WrestleManias in a row, but they also managed to do the unthinkable at WrestleMania X-Seven and top their absolutely bonkers match from the year before. Edge and Christian had prevailed both at WrestleMania 2000 and the inaugural TLC match at SummerSlam 2000.
Everything that could happen in this match did happen. Liberal use was made of the match’s namesake tables, ladders, and chairs. Rhyno interfered on behalf of Edge and Christian. Spike Dudley interfered on behalf of the Dudley Boyz. Lita interfered on behalf of the Hardy Boyz.
Jeff Hardy replicated his dive from the year before, crashing through both Rhyno and Spike Dudley. Stunningly, this was not his most memorable moment on this night. As Jeff attempted to unhook the belts from their harness, Bubba Ray Dudley removed the ladder he was standing on, leaving him suspended in mid air, trying desperately to retrieve the Tag Team Championships.
As Jeff hung vulnerable, Edge ascended a ladder positioned in the corner and, in a moment that will show up in WWE highlight packages for all of time, dove from the ladder and performed a Spear, driving both Jeff and himself to the unforgiving ring below, and breaking Jeff Hardy “smack dab in half,” as Jim Ross memorably shouted.
The finish came when Rhyno pushed over a ladder which held both Bubba Ray Dudley and Matt Hardy, sending the pair through a stack of tables placed at ringside. The “Man Beast” then placed Christian on his shoulders and climbed the ladder, allowing him to retrieve the title belts, ending what was one of the most visually stunning matches in WrestleMania history.
The amount of respect deserved by all of the performers involved is immeasurable. Show this to your friend who dismisses wrestling as “fake.”
Honorable Mention: Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock tore down the house in a match that spelled the end of the Attitude Era.
