WrestleMania XX: Chris Benoit vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels (Triple Threat Match for the World Heavyweight Championship)
Chris Benoit toiled away in the WWE undercard as a quiet workhorse for most of his run. Thus, fans were elated when he won the 2004 Royal Rumble, seeming as if he was finally poised to have his moment. He quickly shocked the world, exploiting a loophole and showing up on Raw to challenge Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Triple H was, however, already embroiled in a bitter feud with Shawn Michaels at the time, so a Triple Threat Match was set for WrestleMania XX. The match itself saw the former D-Generation X comrades forge an uneasy alliance to try to put Benoit away, slamming the “Rabid Wolverine” through the Spanish announce table. Benoit was able to recover just in time to break up a pinfall, preventing Triple H from retaining.
Benoit then disposed of Michaels, tossing him outside of the ring, before locking in the Crippler Crossface and forcing Triple H to submit, becoming World Heavyweight Champion. Then, in a moment that is understandably erased from WWE history, Benoit and WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero tearfully embraced and celebrated in a downpour of confetti as the show went off the air.
It’s very hard to watch for obvious reasons, but it’s still the best match on the card.
