WrestleMania XXVII: The Undertaker vs. Triple H (No Disqualification Match)
In the aftermath of his retiring Shawn Michaels the year prior, The Undertaker took a hiatus from WWE television. He return in February of 2011, following a cryptic series of vignettes. As he hit the ring, however, he found himself interrupted by another returning face: Triple H, who promptly challenged The Dead Man to a match on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
While this was not the Sting match that many fans hoped for or expected, it was absolutely a worthy substitute. Both men had classic entrances, with Triple H entering to Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and Undertaker entering to Johnny Cash’s “Ain’t No Grave,” though both of these have unfortunately been edited out of the version of the show found on the WWE Network.
In an incredibly physical contest, the two hit each other with weapons and fought at ringside, with “The Game” pushing “The Dead Man” through Michael Cole’s “Cole Mine” before slamming him through the Spanish announce table with a spinebuster.
Back in the ring, the two traded signature moved until The Undertaker actually seemed as though he would not be able to make it to his feet. Triple H looked to capitalize with his trusted sledgehammer, but The Undertaker managed to catch him, locking in the Hell’s Gate submission and forcing “The Game” to tap out, bring his streak to 19-0.
By this point, The Undertaker was pretty much only showing up once a year, but it was always for a classic encounter. Being stretchered out made The Undertaker seem more human than he had in quite some time and added a whole new layer to his story as an aging veteran with some fight left in him. This was great stuff.
