WrestleMania XXIX: The Undertaker vs. CM Punk

CM Punk’s final appearance at WrestleMania saw him as the last man to fall to The Undertaker’s legendary undefeated streak. The contest opened with a pair of high of highly memorable entrances, as Punk had Living Colour perform their song “Cult of Personality” live and The Undertaker had perhaps his best ‘Mania entrance of all time (which is no easy feat) as he entered in silhouette, surrounded by the clawing hands of the damned rising from the underworld.

Once in the ring, the two put excellent storytelling on display, as Undertaker exploded the moment the bell rang, unloading on Punk after the latter’s weeks of disrespect toward his friend and manager, the recently deceased Paul Bearer.

Punk, for his part, attempted to play mind games with the Phenom, seeking to throw him off his game and cause him to make just one mistake that would give him an opening. Adding to all this was Paul Heyman on the outside, playing his role to perfection by giving Punk tips and reacting intensely to every near fall.

The Undertaker no-sold a GTS early in the match and rebounded from the ropes to hit a Tombstone, only for Punk to kick out. One heart-stopping false finish saw Punk crack The Undertaker in the head with the urn that had once been carried by Paul Bearer. As much as a foregone conclusion as Undertaker’s WrestleMania matches were once considered, this moment really felt like it might be the end of the much-hyped Streak.

A year later, Punk was gone, and so was the Streak, but this match lives on as one of the finest moments for each.
