WrestleMania 35: Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston (WWE Championship)
Kofi Kingston went from career midcarder to accidental main event sensation in the lead up to WrestleMania 35. An unfortunately timed injury and a series of phenomenal performances in gauntlet matches elevated Kofi to a whole new level.
The last roadblock in his path to immortality came in the form of “The New” Daniel Bryan, who had regained the WWE Championship after discovering a newly found vicious streak in November. Bryan began taunting Kingston with the same rhetoric that had previously been used against him, dubbing him a “B+ Player” who was not worthy of the main event spotlight.
At the show, Kingston fought with all of the heart that had pushed him to the top of the card over night, kicking out of Bryan’s running knee and fighting out of the LeBell Lock on multiple occasions. Late in the match, it seemed as though Rowan, Bryan’s heavy, would get involved, but he was neutralized by Kofi’s New Day compatriots Big E and Xavier Woods.
In the end, Kofi Kingston reached the pinnacle of his decade-plus career in WWE, pinning the former leader of the Yes Movement after a Trouble in Paradise kick. Kofi and the New Day celebrated in the ring with a new WWE Championship belt, unveiling a new t-shirt design that boasted, “There’s a new champ, yes there is.”
There is nothing quite like seeing an underappreciated piece of WWE’s roster finally getting his due, especially on the Grandest Stage of Them All. This was one of the best feel good moments in WrestleMania history and an absolute instant classic.
