WrestleMania VI: The Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan (Intercontinental Championship vs. WWE Championship)
The main event of WrestleMania VI saw “The Ultimate Challenge,” a meeting between two of the largest personalities of the era. One one side was Hulk Hogan and the power of Hulkamania, which had been the dominant force in WWE since 1984. On the other was the surging Ultimate Warrior, whose charisma and popularity masked the fact that he was highly limited in the ring, even compared to Hogan.
The two first met in the Royal Rumble a couple of months earlier. An absolutely electric crowd went wild for the tease, but WWE played their cards smartly and gave that audience only a taste of what was to come.
At WrestleMania VI, the two met in a “title for title” match, pitting Warrior’s Intercontinental Championship against Hogan’s WWE Championship. For 23 minutes, the two did battle. The match was highly choreographed and rehearsed, something that normally feels detrimental to the organic nature of a good match, but when dealing with such limited workers, it does wonders.
One memorable spot saw Hogan and Warrior take each other out with simultaneous clotheslines. Another saw The Ultimate Warrior land a gorilla press on Hogan, who kicked out and Hulked up, only for Warrior to do the unthinkable and dodge Hogan’s leg drop, hopping back up and hitting his own signature splash, finally pinning the Hulkster in what was supposed to be a torch passing moment, as Hogan personally handed Warrior the WWE Championship.
One of the biggest matches of all time, this one is a must see as a fan, even if just for the crowd reaction and the excellent finishing sequence.
