WrestleMania VII: The Ultimate Warrior vs. “Macho King” Randy Savage (Retirement match)
Some way, somehow, The Ultimate Warrior managed to have the match of the night at two consecutive WrestleManias. This time, Warrior took on Randy Savage, in the midst of his run as the “Macho King,” flanked by Queen Sherri rather than Ms. Elizabeth.
Savage had cost Warrior the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble, cracking him in the head with his scepter, and allowing Sgt. Slaughter to pick up the victory. Thus, at WrestleMania VII, Savage and Warrior were to do battle in a match whose loser would be forced to retire from WWE forever.
The longest match on the card at just short of 21 minutes, Savage and Warrior put on a match in which both sold the physical exhaustion associated with such a brutal contest. Neither man would stay down, as the stakes were too high. By the end of the match, The Ultimate Warrior had been stripped of his trademark face paint.
Savage climbed to the top rope and landed his flying elbow drop an astonishing five times, but Warrior was still able to power out of the cover attempt. A series of clotheslines and a gorilla press/splash combination later, and Warrior seemed set to close the book on Savage’s career, only for “The Macho King” to kick out himself.
After Savage missed a double axe handle to the outside of the ring, Warrior rolled him back in and nailed a series of shoulder blocks and covered Savage with only one foot.
As great as the match itself was, the best part was the aftermath, which saw the tearful reunion of Savage and Ms. Elizabeth following an attack by the irate Sherri.
