Braun Strowman vs. Rey Mysterio

Here’s one of those “Are we really crazy enough to do this match?” matches. For my money, yes, WWE is crazy enough to do this match.

Let’s recap what both superstars have done in recent memory. Mysterio has put on countless great matches since returning to WWE, mostly against Andrade. When he’s not up against El Idolo, Mysterio is still great, but there’s something missing. At WrestleMania, he battled through an injury just to get to his match — and lost in less than a minute to Samoa Joe.

Then there’s Braun Strowman, whose most recent feud was against the anchors of “Weekend Update” on Saturday Night Live. Fans complain about the mistreatment of superstars like The Revival, Kofi Kingston, Sasha Banks, Naomi, and others, but has anyone had more stops and starts in their booking than Braun?

Here’s a guy who went from “sure-fire Universal Champion in the next six months” to “we can’t keep you in your match because you can’t win it, but you can’t lose it either.” It’s maddening, and even acknowledging that there may be some behind the scenes stuff that prevents Braun from being given a run at the top, there’s no coherence or logic in how he’s been booked.

So maybe at WWE SummerSlam 2019, it’s time to throw something at the wall and see if it sticks. Both Rey and Braun could use a change of pace — why not do both at once? The quickness and high-flying offense of Mysterio could be the perfect foil for the sheer power and strength of Strowman.

Honestly, the match would be worth it just for the counter of the West Coast Pop into something ridiculous. Remember when Kevin Nash threw Rey like a lawn dart? Let’s see what Braun can do.
