United States Championship Match: Samoa Joe (c) vs. John Cena

The clock is running out to make this one happen, so now’s as good a time as any.

John Cena surprised everyone by coming back as “The Doctor of Thuganomics” at WrestleMania. It was a great throwback to that time when Cena was a bad, bad man. But that nostalgia kick got me thinking about another bad, bad man, who has a history with Cena, as well as a lot in common with the 16-time world champion — Samoa Joe.

Much has been made of the fact that Joe and Cena came up through the same independent promotion, UPW, nearly 20 years ago. Their interactions since then have been limited, with Joe spending much of his career in TNA and Ring of Honor while Cena was on Raw and SmackDown.

But with Joe openly admitting that a match between the two is what got Cena hired by WWE, as well as hoping they can face each other again, there’s only so many opportunities left for this. With Joe reigning as the United States Champion, perhaps he’ll issue an open challenge that gets answered by his old driving buddy.

Ideally, this wouldn’t be left as a surprise encounter. Cena could answer on a televised event prior to WWE SummerSlam 2019, announcing he’ll throw down at The Biggest Party of the Summer. It’s the kind of match that wouldn’t be a main event in 2019, but still has the ability to steal the show.
