Pete Dunne

After pinning former WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne to win the title in a very-good-but-underwhelming match at NXT TakeOver: New York, it seems like WALTER will be the man that the NXT UK brand will be built around for at least the next few months. But where does that leave Dunne?

If you take his post-match comments at face value — and there’s no reason not to — Dunne will likely get a rematch against “The Ring General”, but as interesting as a Dunne title chase story would be, there’s also a non-zero chance that “The Bruiserweight” plies his magnificent talents on one of WWE’s flagship shows.

If that’s the plan, then McMahon and the creative team better have some interesting ideas drawn up. Dunne has spent the nearly two years elevating the status of not only the U.K. Title but the entire NXT UK brand with stellar matches and sublime character work. It would be a shame if WWE marred all of that effort to have Dunne trade wins with The Drifter on RAW.

At only 25 years old, Dunne could potentially spend the majority of his career working at or near the top of most PPVs. Placing him on the main roster could be the start of that, but only if McMahon and the creative team treat the character with the care that it requires.
