Dragon Lee vs Taiji Ishimori Could Steal The Tour

One of the least surprising bits of this show was the chemistry between current IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Dragon Lee and eventual challenger Taiji Ishimori. Lee and Ishimori have an obvious history with one another, most recently coming to a head at G1 Supercard where Lee pinned Bandido in a three-way match.

Post-match in New York City, Ishimori demanded a rematch for the title with the argument that he hadn’t been involved in the deciding fall in MSG. The challenge was immediately accepted and Lee will defend the title against Ishimori in the main event of Wrestling Dontaku night one on May 3.

With the announcement for participants in the biggest BOSJ “in recent memory” coming this week, the end of the Wrestling Dontaku tour will have huge implications once the tournament is underway.

Despite some troubles with his shirt early one (we’ve all been there, haven’t we?), Dragon Lee turned things up and proved to Ishimori and the rest of the Bullet Club just why he deserves his spot atop the Junior Heavyweight division. What will be crucial to the next month is whether or not he retains his championship against the Bone Soldier on May 3.

Anytime Dragon Lee is around in New Japan, the question of Hiromu Takahashi comes up. Really, anytime anything is happening with the Junior Heavyweight Title and there’s even a hint of a surprise, everyone immediately jumps to Hiromu’s name.

With Lee and Ishimori ready to main event the evening on the first night of Wrestling Dontaku, the stage is already set for something truly special to occur. Yes, their match will be completely bonkers and that alone is worthy of being the main event of any show. But, the lingering question is… what if? What if May 3 is the night Hiromu finally steps out from behind the curtain and onto the cerulean blue mat once again?

Topping what is already expected to be a fantastic match with an even more fantastic return has the potential to steal all of the spotlight away from Okada and SANADA the following night. This could be the shot in the arm the Junior Heavyweight division has been needing for quite some time.
