With Kofi Kingston now able to appear on WWE Raw due to the new wild card rule, could we eventually see a unification match between him and Seth Rollins?

On the Raw after WrestleMania, WWE gave us a unique teaser. Kofi Kingston and Seth Rollins briefly squared off against one another in a ‘Winner Take All’ match for the two top titles in the entire company.

Of course, the match was interrupted by Cesaro and Sheamus before any winner was determined, but nevertheless it’s stuck with me.

The question keeps bouncing around in my head of whether or not WWE would actually consider unifying the Universal and WWE Championships in a similar match sometime in the future.

Until now, I think my answer would have been no. Despite that uniquely fun teaser after WrestleMania 35, I feel like WWE wouldn’t essentially erase the last remnants of the brand split by unifying the men’s championships, even if Becky Lynch ever officially combined both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships into a single belt.

With the recent unveiling of the wild card rule however, I’ve taken a moment to reconsider that stance.

Now, since Kofi Kingston is basically able to appear on whichever show he wants, it seems to me like that possibility of a unification match could still be on the table sometime in the future.

After all, with the brand split weakening by the minute, it seems sort of strange that WWE has 2 top titles when you really get down to thinking about it.

Unless some galactic challenger from Planet Kinniku emerges to fight Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship, it’s almost fair to say that the WWE and Universal titles are essentially the same belt when placed on the same brand. They just come with fancier names than the Raw and SmackDown Men’s Championships is all.

Therefore, if these champions would be able to appear on both shows under the wild card rule, it almost seems like there’s no reason to have 2 titles in the first place. They’re not really brand specific belts if the superstars holding them aren’t exclusive to one brand.

What’s stopping WWE from taking the WWE and Universal Championships and unifying them under one superstar in the same fashion as they did with Becky Lynch? That champion could then appear on both shows, setting up challengers with whomever emerged as the best contender at the time.

I think there would be many of the same advantages to having a unified men’s champion as there would be to having a unified women’s champion, something which I have discussed the benefits of in the past.

On top of those aforementioned benefits though, there’s the added bonus of ridding WWE of the garish Universal Championship. At this point, it’s a title with a rather ignominious nature due to it’s near permanent attachment to Brock Lesnar’s legacy in WWE.

The only issue I could see that would stand in the way of a unification match to free the wrestling world from ever having to see that ugly fruit roll-up of a title again would be the overwhelming popularity of both Kofi Kingston and Seth Rollins as face champions.

To be honest, that’s something which would take some time to work through. The obvious solution would probably be to turn Seth Rollins heel, considering not only his history as an amazing heel, but also how chummy he’s seemingly been with Triple H in recent months.

That would undue a quite large effort to turn Rollins into a top tier babyface though. The process of making such a drastic change in character to a man championed for pulling WWE out of the stifling reign of Brock Lesnar would have to be handled with extreme care.

As such, even if this admittedly radical idea of unification were to happen, it likely wouldn’t happen until SummerSlam at the earliest given both the match’s significance and the immense nature of the storyline which would have to be told.

In spite of that, I still think this new wild card rule could have been the start of a long road to unifying the top men’s championships in WWE. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if that Kofi Kingston versus Seth Rollins ‘Winner Take All’ match from Raw was a sign of things to come this year in WWE.
