At Extreme Rules, The Undertaker put in his best performance in years, so could he have a big WWE SummerSlam 2019 match against Drew McIntyre?

The Undertaker made his return to wrestling this year in a rather significant capacity, as he’s been a key part of a storyline this summer involving Shane McMahon’s ego trip. At Extreme Rules, Taker teamed up with Roman Reigns to take on McMahon and Drew McIntyre, with the latter duo receiving a key assist from the disrespectful Elias, who has always made his contempt for The Undertaker clear, during the match.

Although fans didn’t have high hopes for this No Holds Barred tag match going into the show, the match itself turned out to be quite entertaining. And The Undertaker deserves plenty of credit for that, as this was his best performance in ages. Taker looked spry, moving around the ring well and partaking in some crazy spots, including Shane’s elbow to the announce table and the Coast to Coast. He also hit a Tombstone on Shane to pick up the victory for his team.

It was a throwback performance from The Undertaker, who received “You Still Got It” chants from the Philadelphia faithful, and he received quite the ovation from the audience after the match when he had a moment to himself. Following the victory, Michael Cole asked how many more matches Undertaker would have in WWE.

Could one of those matches occur at WWE SummerSlam 2019? And could it happen against Drew McIntyre? Independent wrestling reporter Tom Colohue reported prior to Sunday’s match that McIntyre, Taker, and even Vince McMahon are all on board.

This year offered us the first WrestleMania since 2000 in which The Undertaker did not compete, so it would be fitting for him to wrestle at WWE’s second-biggest show of the year in Toronto to make up for it. Furthermore, The Undertaker is looking his best right now and after his performance at Extreme Rules, the questions of whether or not he could hold up in the ring with McIntyre have been dispelled; he and McIntyre seemed to have great chemistry in the ring.

McIntyre is a future Universal Champion, but he’s lost some momentum this summer due to this seemingly aimless program with Shane McMahon has his partner in crime. A big match against The Undertaker at SummerSlam could do wonders for McIntyre, because, win or lose, locking horns with a living legend is not something many WWE Superstars can boast.

The Undertaker has a few other possible dream opponents, such as Aleister Black, but McIntyre is more established and carries more name value. That makes it far more likely for the McIntyre vs. Undertaker speculation to come to fruition, and it seems like there isn’t another match that would make sense. Another Shane vs. Taker match isn’t interesting and seems too risky. Elias vs. Taker? Perhaps, but McIntyre would be a bigger and better opponent, especially when looking at the potential in-ring quality.

There’s little doubt that Taker impressed at Extreme Rules, exceeding our minimal expectations. Despite a woeful performance with Goldberg in Saudi Arabia, The Undertaker has shown that he has something left in the tank, especially when competing with superior pro wrestlers to Goldberg. McIntyre is one of the best in the business, as anyone who watched his NXT Championship reign – or work on the independent scene before his second stint in WWE – can attest.

Before Extreme Rules, I would’ve had zero interest in McIntyre vs. Taker. But now? Color me intrigued by this possible matchup between one current titan and one titan of the past. The shot of McIntyre attempting to go for the final blow on The Undertaker, a Claymore Kick, only to be intercepted by Reigns is still in my head, as is McIntyre’s frustration after watching Undertaker pin his tag team partner.

There’s unfinished business here on McIntyre’s end, and he is one of the handful of wrestlers who could benefit the most from a program with The Phenom. And on top of that, there’s a story here that needs to be wrapped up; SummerSlam could be the perfect venue for a closure.
