WWE: Drew Gulak vs. Isaiah Scott could be a great opportunity for both men
Friday, WWE announced Drew Gulak will face Isaiah “Swerve” Scott in the main event of next week’s episode of 205 Live.
Over the last few months, the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion, Drew Gulak, has been an ambassador of sorts for the division, participating in matches on NXT with Matt Riddle and KUSHIDA. It’s a testament to how much WWE values him. As the new face of 205 Live, he plans to lead by example, meaning all challengers must come to him.
This week, recent NXT signee, Isaiah Scott, will venture to the purple and orange brand to take on Gulak in the main event.
Scott, who is better known as Shane Stickland, was one of the hottest free agents in wrestling before he signed with WWE in April. Fans may recognize him as Killshot, due to his time with Lucha Underground. He is also well known for his work with MLW, Defy, CZW, and Evolve. Gulak and Scott have crossed paths several times in the past, so they know each other well.
Surprisingly, Scott lost in the first round of the NXT Breakout Tournament. He had an impressive showing but he ultimately lost to Cameron Grimes. However, the fact that he’s already getting an opportunity to headline 205 Live proves the company has more plans for him.
Moreover, if anyone can help Swerve get over with the WWE Universe, it’s Gulak. His heel work with cruiserweight division is often overlooked. He was instrumental in the growth in popularity of Akira Tozawa, Tony Nese, and Ali.
This year, Gulak has emerged as a workhorse for the company, working with other high-profile NXT acquisitions. His distinct mat-based style makes him a formidable test for even the most revered Superstars.
This will make for a competitive match with a well-rounded wrestler like Scott. Swerve is known for his high-flying style, which would set him apart even among the cruiserweights. He’s also an adept striker and he has a good mat game. Lastly, 205 Live is consistently the place to go for high-quality matches, so there’s no doubt the main event will be given plenty of time.
Now, let’s be honest. Gulak will more than likely win the match, but it’s still such a great opportunity to introduce Isaiah Scott to a new audience. Even if he loses, this is a chance for Swerve to showcase his move set and charisma. The exposure could give him a solid launchpad on NXT and later on the main roster.
On the other hand, a strong and decisive win over someone as good as Scott will make Gulak look like a competent champion. So, this is a win-win situation for both competitors. The fact that they already have some chemistry together adds even more intrigue to this exhibition.
In short, Drew Gulak vs. Isaiah Scott should be a great match, which could benefit both men and their respective brands. Hopefully, this will get more eyes on 205 Live and help Scott accumulate some new fans in the process.
