On the latest episode of WWE NXT, Jordan Myles was the winner of an NXT Breakout Tournament. By being declared the winner of the tournament, Myles receives a title match of his choice.

Conventional wisdom would lead fans to believe that Myles will use this opportunity to challenge Adam Cole for the NXT Championship.

It is my belief that NXT has the opportunity to make Jordan Myles their next star. Having him wrestle Adam Cole for the NXT Championship is not the most effective development for the character of Jordan Myles.

Adam Cole is universally loved by the NXT fans. In Adam Cole’s recent NXT Championship match vs Johnny Gargano, it can be debated on who the fans were more in support of.

Now that the Gargano vs Cole feud has reached its conclusion, Cole will need an opponent to continue to strengthen his character as the NXT Champion.

One thing that WWE NXT has done an incredible job at is building stars. Every time a crop of stars goes up to the main roster, there are always new stars ready to take over for them. Jordan Myles should be the next in a long list of talent that NXT has built.

In an era of instant gratification, the character development of Jordan Myles does not need to be hindered by challenging Adam Cole, yet. Adam Cole should be able to develop a strong run as Champion.

NXT has the makings of a new star in Jordan Myles. There is no need to have Jordan Myles lose immediately to Adam Cole in his first NXT Championship match.

Where NXT can succeed with Jordan Myles is having him challenge Velveteen Dream for the North American Championship at the next Takeover show. Velveteen Dream has been a character stuck in neutral for the last month.

It is apparent that he has all the tools of a future NXT main event wrestler. In order for Dream to reach that next level in NXT, he will have to lose the North American Championship.

It is a win-win situation for NXT where they can maximize the result of Jordan Myles winning the NXT Breakout Tournament by having him win the North American Championship, and have Velveteen Dream go to the main event picture to eventually face Adam Cole.

The NXT Breakout Tournament is a new concept. Jordan Myles is a new wrestler in the eyes of the casual NXT fan. Myles losing his match against Adam Cole for the NXT Heavyweight Championship, while diminishing the concept of the tournament, will also stunt the growth of Jordan Myles’ character.

Even coming off the strength of winning The NXT Breakout Tournament, it will be hard to find fans who believe Jordan Myles is a main event caliber performer. That isn’t a slight against Jordan Myles the performer, he has the tools you need to eventually carry the load for NXT.

There is an alternate scenario where Jordan Myles doesn’t cash in his championship opportunity right away. He can use this, the same way that previous superstars have used winning the WWE Money in the Bank briefcase, as a way to develop his character.

The Miz’s initial rise to superstardom in 2010 comes to find here. Miz was not a main event talent before he had the threat to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase. The cache that the briefcase gave him helped him cement his character in WWE.

The argument against the Jordan Myles character waiting to cash in his championship opportunity, and facing Adam Cole immediately, is that it can instantly elevate Myles to the top of the card. The concern with that is what happens to Jordan Myles if/when he loses. How does the character respond? Can the character respond?

We have seen many examples of performers never being able to recapture that connection with the fans after their first loss.

Let’s hope that months down the road, fans are able to believe in Jordan Myles because he won the NXT Breakout Tournament, as opposed to thinking that the person who wins the NXT Breakout Tournament is just the next person for the NXT Champion to defeat.

There is value in NXT exercising patience with the rise of Jordan Myles. NXT has shown an ability to bring new characters on in a believable manner. It is fair to give them the benefit of the doubt that they won’t rush Jordan Myles’ character development.
