Drew McIntyre has been among WWE Raw’s top stars since returning to the main roster last year. With the King of the Ring tournament coming back, McIntyre is the most logical pick to win it all.

The King of the Ring tournament has historically been among the most prestigious accomplishments a wrestler could achieve in WWE.

For Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Brock Lesnar, Booker T and Kurt Angle, it was a launching pad to push them towards being constant fixtures in the main event scene. For the likes of Mabel and Bad News Barrett, it didn’t really do much for them in hindsight besides saddle them with an ill-fitting royalty gimmick.

This year’s field is quite stacked with Ricochet, Samoa Joe, Cesaro, Andrade, Ali, and Buddy Murphy being just a few of the tournament’s 16 participants.

While all of those names—and more—would be great picks to take the crown, Drew McIntyre should be the one to emerge as the first King of the Ring winner in over four years.

Ever since splitting from Dolph Ziggler—and arguably before as well—McIntyre has been seen as the next man up for main event prominence. McIntyre went on an eight-month long undefeated streak to kick off his main roster return, was in or around main event territory through his battles with The Shield, and has victories over some of the most recognizable names in WWE.

For most of this year though, he has played bodyguard for Baron Corbin, and more recently Shane McMahon. While he has still been prominent in those roles, most assumed Drew’s role as the muscle behind the loudmouth ended when his alliance with Ziggler reached a violent conclusion.

After a banger against Cedric Alexander on the last Raw, winning the King of the Ring tournament would be a great chance for McIntyre to keep the momentum going. Not only could the tournament elevate McIntyre, but depending how he’d capitalize on winning King of the Ring, he could help re-establish the tournament as the genesis for main event stardom.

Currently, the main event ranks are in reset mode with Seth Rollins recently reclaiming the Universal Championship from Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.

AJ Styles is occupied as the United States Champion, and has already battled Seth Rollins three times this year. There’s no telling how Braun Strowman saving Rollins will play out and the other likely contenders—McIntyre included—are in the King of the Ring tournament.

Unless a Lesnar rematch is in the works, all these factors leave the door wide open for King of the Ring to send Drew McIntyre to the front of the line for the Universal Championship.

Considering Rollins’ history with McIntyre and both men’s in-ring ability, the idea of them waging war over the Universal Championship is enticing.

Drew McIntyre is set for what should be an exceptional first round match against Ricochet and hopefully, it’ll kickstart a well-deserved rise to the top for one of the best performers in wrestling today.
