After an impressive victory over Cedric Alexander in the quarterfinal round this week, all signs point to Baron Corbin taking his rightful place on the throne as the next King of the Ring in WWE.

If you were to tell me at the beginning of the WWE King of the Ring tournament that I would actually end up rooting for Baron Corbin, I would have called you crazy. Yet, somehow, as he continues to impress with both his in-ring and microphone skills over the past few weeks, I am starting to like the sound of “King Corbin”.

Corbin received a significant push back in June as he challenged Seth Rollins for the Universal Title on three consecutive PPVs. It was reported at the time that the reason for this was attributed to his looks as he is believed to be a “heartthrob” among female fans.

As a result, many felt that Baron Corbin was being overpushed, especially after that horrible Constable gimmick from 2018. Since Corbin has fallen out of the World Title picture, he is much better suited in his current role highlighted by his performance in the King of the Ring tournament thus far.

A win in this tournament is exactly what Baron Corbin needs in order to solidify himself into a legitimate main event level heel. One can argue that he is currently one of the biggest heels in the company, but he lacks the credibility of being main event level, largely in part to losing three straight Universal Title matches.

Having Corbin win the tournament is an opportunity to build him back up with credibility and draw even more heat to one of the most hated Superstars in the WWE. In the past, we have traditionally had a heel King of the Ring including Booker-T, Brock Lesnar, and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Baron Corbin fits the exact persona of previous tournament winners in that he is an established heel that feeds into the arrogance of being called a King.

WWE has continued to tease fans with the possibility of Corbin winning the tournament as he has sat in the throne on the RAW stage following both of his victories. We even got to hear Corbin proclaim that he does care for what the WWE Universe thinks of him winning and that he will indeed win the tournament.

Two rounds into the tournament and Baron Corbin has already put on impressive performances in both of his matches against The Miz and Cedric Alexander. His match against Alexander this past week is arguably the best match of his entire career thus far and really helped position Corbin as a legitimate contender to win the tournament.

Next. WWE need to go full throttle on Bayley's heel turn. dark

As we look ahead, a triple threat match with Corbin, Samoa Joe, and Ricochet should be a great match that I am rooting for Baron Corbin to come away from victorious and get one step closer to winning the tournament and having King Corbin become a household name.
