WWE Clash of Champions showed importance of Women’s Tag Titles
WWE Clash of Champions 2019 was a strong show from top to bottom, but one of the most important takeaways is the rising stock of the Women’s Tag Team Championships.
Remember how we all begged for WWE to finally give us Women’s Tag Team Titles? And remember how awesome it was seeing Sasha Banks and Bayley become the first champions in the same Elimination Chamber structure that nearly broke apart their friendship one year ago? Wasn’t it awesome knowing that they were the first champions after pushing Vince McMahon to make them a reality?
The Women’s Tag Team Championships evidently ended up becoming an afterthought to Vince and WWE’s brass, as they didn’t give The IIconics enough opponents or screen time to shine as the second champions following WrestleMania 35.
But now, the Women’s Tag Team Titles feel like they might be getting the care they need.
Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss have become one of the most exciting partnerships in WWE over the past few months. Bliss has been as brilliant as usual on the mic, while Cross has established herself as one of the main roster’s biggest breakout stars. The two have this innate chemistry together, which has extended to the ring since they’ve become the champions.
WWE Clash of Champions 2019 featured a barnburner between Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks, a quality Intercontinental Title match, a slow-burner Randy Orton match against Kofi Kingston, and a crazy No DQ bout between Erick Rowan and Roman Reigns among many other solid matches.
Yet when ranking the night’s most important matches, the Women’s Tag Title bout between Bliss/Cross and Fire and Desire (comprised of Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose) has to be ranked among the most important.
On quality alone, it was arguably one of the top three matches, showcasing excellent in-ring psychology from the heels that was more than matched by a heroic babyface effort from Cross, who picked up the winning pin.
Bliss is already a Superstar, but Cross looked like one, too. She has done nothing but impress, and in a match in which Rose and Deville brilliantly did what they could to give space Cross to shine, the former member of Sanity did absolutely everything right.
With one strong match, the Women’s Tag Titles are squarely back on the radar as a key title in WWE, even though they received far less fanfare than many of the other matches on the card. And who could blame the fans for overlooking this match when Lynch vs. Banks and Charlotte Flair vs. Bayley were the other women’s titles matches at Clash of Champions? Those were two of the most highly-anticipated matches of the year.
Despite this, Cross, Bliss, Deville, and Rose managed to put together a great match, overcoming any lack of hype, or the grating heel commentary from Corey Graves.
Deville and Rose were perfect opponents for Cross and Bliss on this night, and while there’s uncertainty as to who they’ll face in the Women’s Tag Team Division, there should be plenty of optimism surrounding the titles.
An IIconics vs. Bliss/Cross rivalry could be wonderful, and if Cross and Bliss retain, it would be equally exciting to see who would await them. For now, though, WWE fans should continue to cheer on the Women’s Tag Team Titles as loudly as possible, and hopefully WWE took notice of the strong effort from these four women at Clash of Champions.
