WWE rumor roundup: Plans for The Rock, could Edge get cleared?
AEW defeated WWE NXT in the ratings in their first head-to-head matchup, but what else is going on in the wrestling world right now?
The Wednesday Night Wars are already off to a strong start, as AEW and WWE NXT received around 2.3 million viewers combined. Hopefully, both shows will be able to attract new fans as the months roll onward, potentially bumping that number above the overall viewership for Raw (around 2.5 million).
Until then, let’s look at some rumors.
The Rock in a segment with Becky Lynch?
Everyone is wondering exactly what The Rock will be doing in his appearance on the first episode of WWE SmackDown on FOX this Friday night, and Sportskeeda’s Tom Colohue has the scoop on what The Rock apparently wants to do.
Per Colohue, The Rock will be “very disappointed” if he isn’t involved in a segment with Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, who will have the biggest match at Hell in a Cell against Sasha Banks this Sunday.
Lynch is the top star in the company right now after winning in the main event of WrestleMania 35, grabbing both prestigious titles in the process. She has since carried the Raw Women’s Title with pride, so it’s no surprise to hear that The Rock prioritizes working with her.
Plus, Becky’s been brilliant in segments with other legends. She ethered Edge on the 1000th episode of SmackDown last year, owned John Cena over the holidays, and hit Stone Cold Steve Austin with a “Stunner” in a skit.
So imagine what she’ll do to The Rock? Fingers crossed that “The Great One” gets his wish.
What could be planned beyond Friday for The Rock?
Unsurprisingly, everyone wants a piece of The Rock. Randy Orton even tweeted a WrestleMania 36 challenge to the legend ahead of his appearance on SmackDown.
Now, I doubt many people would want to see Orton go up against Rock in an unlikely matchup, because if The Rock finally returns to the ring to face someone, fans will want him to go up against a new star for a fresher matchup.
And when fans speculate on a possible dream match for The Rock in 2020, Roman Reigns’s name is usually the first one to come up.
Like Becky, Reigns is a top star in WWE, and the fact that he’s The Rock’s cousin adds even more intrigue to a possible matchup. Reigns vs. The Rock would certainly be WrestleMania worthy, have brutal insults in the build-up, and feature two larger-than-life athletes competing on the grand stage.
Reigns recently said on GQ Sports’ Actually Me segment that he’d be open to a feud with his cousin if it were “done right”.
While The Rock’s appearance on SmackDown may be a one-off thing, fans will be hoping it could lead to one more big match down the line. There doesn’t seem to be a more ideal opponent than Reigns, who has been as good as ever. (Go watch his wonderful match with Buddy Murphy on SmackDown a few weeks ago if you don’t believe me.)
