Ric Flair and Sting vs Great Muta and Terry Funk – Halloween Havoc 1989

The first main event of the first Halloween Havoc needed to be special. In 1989, WCW threw in four of their top wrestlers, and let them do what they do best.

The biggest surprise from this match was how good Gary Hart was as a manager. It is unfortunate that WWE doesn’t remember him the same way that WWE remembers Bobby Heenan or Jimmy Hart. He was equally as good in this match

Great Muta and Terry Funk were at their in ring prime. Both men were effective and different in their roles as an antagonist. Flair was at his peak as an in ring talent. While it is easy to see Ric Flair of the past 10 years and forget how great he was in the ring, this match showed why Flair was the franchise of NWA/WCW.

The addition of Bruno Sammartino made the match seem like it was truly the main event.

All four men used the cage as a weapon. This was not seen in prior cage matches of that era. It added the element of danger that had not been seen previously.

Funk was at his best while selling the effects a leg injury. That would then play a role the finish when Flair locked in the Figure Four Leglock. As Gary Hart threw in the towel on Funk’s behalf, the crowd came unglued.
