In honor of the Dia de Los Muertos holiday, we are going to take a look at some of the best Mexican wrestlers from promotions like WWE and AAA, among others, who have passed on.

On Nov. 2, people of Mexican descent celebrate the Day of the Dead or “Dia De Los Muertos.” Not to be confused with Halloween, Día de Los Muertos is about honoring the deceased by celebrating their life. The idea is to remember a person as they were before they went to the afterlife. I’m here to look back on the careers of the best deceased Mexican wrestlers (from WWE and elsewhere) of all time.

On Día de Los Muertos, the tradition is that the dead are supposed to “join” the living in celebration. Among other traditions celebrated folks of Mexican heritage include shrines built for children and adults alike. Angelitos (angels) descend down from above to reunite with their families for a couple of days. Children come down on Halloween and souls of adults descend on Nov. 2.

For the souls of children who passed away, people leave skeleton toys and sugar skulls called calaveritas. Folks build altares, which are shrines or altars that richly honor and celebrate loved ones lost, displaying a deceased person’s prized possessions and their favorite foods. Many Mexican and Latin families visit the cemetery to honor their loved ones.

I am a Chicano (Mexican American). My family has a shrine in our restaurant here to honor the owners as well as their oldest son who recently passed.  Being familiar with this Holiday, I looked forward to contributing with this article. I am familiar with some of the legendary Lucha Libre stars of yesteryear. So on this day, I am going to provide you with my list of the top three deceased Mexican wrestlers who ever graced the squared circle.

There are so many Mexican legends who have retired but are still alive today. Men like Dos Caras, Mil Mascaras, Negro Casas and El Hijo Del Santo are among the most popular stars of their generation. Rey Mysterio, Dr. Wagner Jr., Dragon Lee, Rey Fenix and Pentagon are names that continue to wrestle today. They are some of the best performers in the World today and have performed in Mexico, The United States and all over the globe.

Here is my list of the three best Mexican wrestlers who have passed away.  May their legacies continue to live on in our minds and hearts.
