5. Team WWE vs. Team WCW – 2001

It is impossible to talk about Survivor Series without talking about at least one elimination match, since those traditional five-on-five matches have always been such a cherished staple of the PPV since its very humble beginnings. Rest assured that this list has not just one, but TWO elimination matches. But let’s talk about one at a time, folks.

The first is one that I think may very well be the first genuinely great elimination match in Survivor Series history. Because, let’s face it, there were not many memorable elimination matches at the PPV prior to the 2001 that made an impression on anyone by time the show was over. Some elimination matches were just flat out comedy matches (again, remember the one with the tiny clowns). But perhaps for the first time in the show’s long history, this one had stakes to get the crowd invested.

Say what you will about how WWE executed their Invasion storyline (let’s face it, there is a lot of bad that stems from that angle), but their Survivor Series 2001 main event where the angle came to a close was so fantastic that it almost makes up for the worse aspects of this entire angle.

The match showcases nine of the very best wrestlers who were on the wrestling scene at this point – and Shane McMahon – going at it for all the marbles. Guys like The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Rob Van Dam and Booker T were just some of the star studded names that rounded out this classic bout.
