Following a win over Matt Riddle at WWE NXT TakeOver WarGames, Finn Balor could have the comeback of a lifetime on the black and gold brand.

WWE NXT TakeOver WarGames served as Finn Balor’s first TakeOver match since returning to the black and gold brand. When he first returned, a lot of critics were quick to write it down as a step down for a former World Champion on WWE’s “main roster.” Specifically, WWE’s first ever Universal Champion.

But it’s important to recognize two things. One is that NXT is considered part of the main roster now since acquiring the USA Network deal and is now more than just a developmental brand. It’s not a step down. Just a change in location. And two, it’s important to recognize where Balor was prior to the move.

It would be doing Balor himself a disservice to not acknowledge the fact that Balor, for a long time now, has been at a crossroads. In limbo, if you will, especially in 2019. He failed to regain the Universal Championship from Brock Lesnar back in January. He won, lost, won again and lost again the Intercontinental Championship all in quick succession. The character was then was dominated by The Fiend at SummerSlam, leading to a hiatus (albeit, in real life, Balor just left to go get married).

Balor was in desperate need of a fresh start and now he’s got it after not only returning to NXT, but turning heel. And now, he’s won a match at TakeOver against game competition in Matt Riddle. His win against Riddle signals something that he failed to do so many times over the past year on Raw and SmackDown: win a big match on a big show when it mattered the most.

It’s only one big win so far, but it’s a happy start in the beginning in what could very well be a great comeback for Balor. He could continue to have some memorable feuds and matches with men like Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano, Adam Cole, etc. (all angles which have been set up and remain in the background for now). He could mold the future whilst adding stock to his own value, then when he’s ready, he can return to Raw or SmackDown as a rechristened Prince to have the run he should have had from the start.

A rejuvenated Balor is best for business and it could lead to a thrilling comeback.
