WWE SmackDown: Don’t call Roman Reigns vs. Dolph Ziggler boring
The Dec. 6 episode of WWE SmackDown will feature yet another singles match between Roman Reigns and Dolph Ziggler, and while some fans will dismiss it as a “boring repeat”, they should really be excited for another barnburner between these two veterans.
Roman Reigns doesn’t have bad matches. It’s that simple. Yet some professional wrestling fans, perhaps due to jealousy or past bitterness, don’t want to admit that Reigns consistently delivers whether he’s wrestling on television or on Pay Per View. Just this year on WWE SmackDown, Reigns has put together several brilliant get-over matches for other performers, notably Buddy Murphy in the Fall.
WWE have announced that Reigns will take on Dolph Ziggler on the Dec. 6 episode of SmackDown on FOX, and while this isn’t a “get over” match for Ziggler, it will be a great opportunity for Reigns to pick up an “easy” win to gain more momentum for Royal Rumble Season.
I put “easy” in air quotes to highlight the dual meaning of the word here. It’s going to be an “easy” win for Reigns, in the sense that Ziggler, as per usual, has no realistic chance of winning. But it’s NOT going to be “easy” in the realm of kayfabe; none of Roman’s matches are straightforward.
Ziggler will have his chances, he’ll get the live crowd going with a few superkicks and Famousers, which Reigns will desperately sell and BARELY kick out of at 2.9999999, but Reigns will Spear him into 200 different strands of hair and hair metal jackets.
Basically, it’s going to be the kind of match Twitter yawns at, and then goes crazy at when it actually happens. Ziggler and Reigns have gone head-to-head so many times in the past, they kill it every time. They have the chemistry of two experienced veterans who are among the best workers in WWE over the last 10 years, and, I mean, what’s not to love about them facing off?
When they last had a match on Aug. 19 on Raw, Ziggler sold the hell out of Reigns’ spear. Hopefully, he finds a way to top that sell on Dec. 6.
But it’s hard to feel bad for Ziggler when he inevitably gets destroyed by Reigns on Friday night. He keeps getting into matches with Reigns, whom he asked to face one-on-one in August before getting obliterated, and he invariably gets it handed to him. That’s typical for Ziggler in kayfabe; at this point, Bobby Roode’s heel tag team partner likes to get himself into fights that he can’t win.
As for Reigns, he’s on the road to potentially main eventing WrestleMania 36 for a big title win. He was already the Sole Survivor at Survivor Series, positioning him for a huge run to the top once the calendar flips to 2020.
In the meantime, enjoy the match between these two veterans on Friday. Underestimate it, hate on it, then go crazy when it happens and you remember how good these guys are in the ring.
