The Undertaker vs. Sting has always been the elusive WWE dream match for wrestling fans, and it’s a WrestleMania proposition that still weighs on the former face of WCW’s mind.

Sting is one of the greatest professional wrestlers in history, and he is seen as the textbook example of a great babyface. Although Sting already made his return to WWE and has been inducted in Vince McMahon’s Hall of Fame, his appearance with the promotion didn’t leave a great taste in everybody’s mouths, even though he was realistically never going to go over Triple H.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso, the WCW icon spoke about the one match that could coax him out of retirement.

Yes, that match is the same dream match wrestling fans have been kicking around for more than a decade. The Undertaker vs. Sting on the Grandest Stage of Them All, WrestleMania.

"“If there was a ’Taker situation at WrestleMania, I would listen to that phone call. I could get in condition and I could pull it off.”"

It says a lot about Sting that he feels he could get into condition for this match, but nobody should doubt the man when he says that. The aura of facing Taker at ‘Mania would be too much to resist for anyone, but there’s an extra level of magnitude when it comes to the Sting vs. Taker match due to all the fan interest. Even fans who have written this off or wouldn’t want to see either legend of the past in a ‘Mania match would at least tune in out of curiosity.

For what it’s worth, though, even Sting isn’t getting his hopes up about this match happening.

"“I still think about the ‘Taker situation every year, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.”"

Sting retired from in-ring competition in 2016 after suffering a neck injury in a match with current top star Seth Rollins, who has come full circle again as a heel heading into 2020.

Meanwhile, the Undertaker is coming off an ill-fated match against Goldberg at Crown Jewel, but he has shown positive qualities in the ring when protected. His tag team work with Roman Reigns – I call them the Graveyard Dogs – was quite good, for example.

Next. Women's Tag Titles could still use a credibility boost. dark

The ship has probably sailed on The Undertaker vs. Sting, but when it comes to wrestling, never say never. I mean, CM Punk is on a WWE talk show as an employee of FOX in 2019, so anything can happen.

At the very least, it’s interesting to see that this one WrestleMania match still piques Sting’s interest all the years after his official retirement.
