Edge hasn’t wrestled in WWE for more than eight years after suffering a career-ending injury, but there have been increasing rumors of a possible shock in-ring return for The Rated R Superstar.

Now is the time of year when we start talking about surprise WWE Royal Rumble entrants, and if you want a truly shocking name to throw into the ring, look no further than “The Ultimate Opportunist” Edge.

Although I always file in-ring return rumors regarding Edge in the “I believe it when I see it” column, these latest rumblings come from a credible reporter who has outlined all the reasons pointing towards a possible surprise Rumble return in January 2020.

When asked about Edge possibly wrestling again in his mailbag column, PWInsider.com’s Mike Johnson wrote that he thinks an in-ring return could actually happen. Johnson pointed to Edge signing a new deal with WWE “that has a pretty nice upside” financially, which would seem to indicate a more substantial role in the company than episodes of the Edge and Christian show. (But the show is so good that I wouldn’t necessarily blame Vince McMahon for shelling out a few million bucks for it.)

Anyway, PWInsider.com also reported in October that The Rated R Superstar was in Pittsburgh to visit Dr. Joseph Maroon, who is the head of WWE’s medical department. Edge had previously shut down the earlier rumors of an in-ring return, as always, but this could be a case of him wanting to keep the surprise a true surprise. (And that’s a wise move.)

Again, Edge’s neck injury was so serious that it seemed impossible for him to ever return to the ring. Even contemplating it seemed ridiculous and a case of fans either putting undue pressure on the wrestler or getting their hopes up for nothing.

But Johnson’s “gut feeling” is that Edge will make a surprise return at the Rumble at Minute Maid Park, believing there is “something to” the internal rumblings within WWE that Edge will be returning to the ring soon.

It’s important to be skeptical when it comes to the rumors of this WWE legend getting back in the ring, but if Johnson’s reporting and instincts say there’s something here, then it’s a situation worth keeping in mind as we head into 2020’s Rumble Season.
