Johnny Gargano

In a case of shameless counter-programming, this past Wednesday’s NXT opened up with an NXT Title tilt between Adam Cole and Finn Balor opposite … a Kenny Omega/”Hangman” Adam Page vs. Lucha Bros. tag team match.

The match itself was what you would expect from Cole and Balor, but the headline for this one came during the late stages, and it didn’t come from either champion or challenger, but from someone both men know quite well: Johnny Gargano.

As Balor looked set to win his second NXT Championship with his 1916 DDT, the rising cheers of the Full Sail Arena crowd alerted him to his arch-nemesis’ return, with his own eyes subsequently confirming his suspicions.

As Balor stood in shock, Cole used his opponent’s momentary pause in focus to hit him south of the border and deliver The Last Shot to retain his title. Then, it was time for Gargano to exact some measure of revenge in the form of multiple vicious chair shots that sent Balor retreating from his rival.

It was a great moment for Gargano and it was great to hear the crowd cheer his return considering that Balor is a guy the fans still like despite his heel alignment. These two appear set to face off at the next NXT TakeOver in what will likely garner some Match of the Year consideration.
