WWE Royal Rumble 2020: 3 reasons why Asuka should beat Becky Lynch
Tells an interesting story
Throughout this latest rendition of their feud, we have been reminded about how Becky Lynch has struggled to defeat Asuka time and time again.
Of course, first, it was The Empress who pulled down The Man’s belt at TLC in 2018. Then, a month later, Asuka successfully defended that belt by tapping Lynch out at the Royal Rumble. The Empress continued to play a thorn in Lynch’s side during the latter part of 2019 in tag team competition.
The fact that Becky Lynch views her inability to defeat Asuka as a plague that’s gnawing at her in the back of her mind makes for a fascinating story. This could all just be leading to Lynch finally getting her win back at WWE Royal Rumble 2020, but I think this story has potential to be even more fascinating if Lynch still can’t beat her next month.
It’s a story that reminds me of Dean Ambrose’s (now Jon Moxley) early feud with Seth Rollins and how he struggled to beat Rollins until it mattered most, the episode of Raw where he had to beat Rollins to earn entry into the Payback 2015 main event. Or even Raven’s storyline with Tommy Dreamer where it was impossible for Dreamer to beat Raven until the latter’s final match in ECW.
In both instances, the crowd erupted when the babyface finally got their win back because the storyline prolonged it for so long. The more the story put the win off, the more invested fans were, making the moment it happened all the more satisfying. Asuka vs. Becky Lynch has that same potential.
