WWE: R-Truth broke Edge’s championship record in 2019
A monster in the world championship picture and as a tag team wrestler, Edge came into 2019 as the wrestler with the most title wins in WWE history. But his reign ended, thanks to R-Truth and the 24/7 championship.
Apparently the USA Network sent WWE a list of ideas in an effort to pop the ratings after WrestleMania 35, and the 24/7 championship was the least bad idea pitched by the network. So Vince McMahon took it, and R-Truth ran with it.
From pinning Jinder Mahal on an airplane to getting into 24/7 title shenanigans with Drake Maverick at his wedding (and in the bedroom), Truth made sure the title, whose name he STILL can’t correctly say, gave wrestling fans some of the best comedy moments of 2019.
In total, Truth has won the championship 29 times. According to WWE Stats & Info, he broke not one but two records this year. Not only did he accrue the most championship wins in a single calendar year, which included a United States Title triumph, but he has also broken Edge’s record of 31 career title wins.
Technically, the nature of the 24/7 title means Truth needs an asterisk by his name if we’re comparing him head-to-head with Edge, but nobody is doing that. Instead, we’re appreciative of what Truth has done with what was otherwise a throwaway idea from the USA Network. Truth turned it into gold, with the help of wrestlers like Carmella, Jinder Mahal, Renee Michelle, and Drake Maverick.
But it all starts and ends with Truth, whose character work has made him a key part of WWE despite his lengthy tenure. No matter what slander WhatCulture used to levy at him, Truth has always been one of WWE’s most entertaining wrestlers. And now, he can say he’s a 29-time 24/7 champion, a two-time US Champ, a two-time Hardcore champion, and a former Tag Team Champion. Count it up, and that’s 34 career title wins!
To think it all started when R-Truth watched John Cena on television growing up, idolizing the 16-time world champion. And now, he has more title reigns than Cena in his career. Did I mention how much I love wrestling?
