Spoilers: Big title change takes place at Impact Wrestling tapings
Nearly a week after Impact Wrestling held its Hard to Kill PPV, there was a big title change that took place at TV tapings held in Mexico.
Last Sunday marked Impact Wrestling’s first Pay-Per-View of the new year, Hard to Kill. While all four of the company’s titles were on the line, only one title changed hands during the main event when Tessa Blanchard defeated Sami Callihan to become the new Impact World Champion.
Of course, due to accusations of being both a racist and a bully from a mass of wrestlers across social media, the decision to dub Blanchard the first woman to ever win the belt had split audiences around the world. This title change set the stage for another title change that took place this past weekend during Impact’s television tapings hailing from Mexico City.
The first set of tapings began on Jan. 17 and kicked off with a World Title feud being set up between Blanchard and the Knockouts Champion, Taya Valkyrie. Valkyrie successfully defended her title during last week’s Pay-Per-View in a three way dance against ODB and Jordynne Grace.
The next night, Valkyrie defended her belt once more against Jordynne Grace, this time in a one-on-one scenario, but this time, Valkyrie was not so lucky to walk out of the ring unscathed with her title in hand. Following the belt, it was Grace who had her hand raised as the new Knockouts Champion.
What makes this title change so big is that prior to her loss, Valkyrie became the longest reigning Knockouts Champion in the company’s history with her title reign clocking in at 377 days.
Earlier this year, Grace enjoyed a lengthy title run of her own with the Progress Women’s Championship for 259 days before losing the title to Meiko Satomura back in September. In kicking off 2020 in style, we’ll have to wait and see if Grace’s run with her new title is just as lengthy.
