WWE: 3 reasons why John Cena should not face Elias at WrestleMania 36
Elias shouldn’t lose
While nothing about Elias’ booking over the past couple of years screams “future world champion”, WWE have quietly booked him strongly since the Fall. Since August of 2019, Elias has television victories over Kevin Owens, Mustafa Ali, Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura with Braun Strowman as his tag team partner, and Cesaro in singles competition.
That’s a pretty solid resume of wins for a guy who barely wrestles, and he’s currently 2-0 on SmackDown in the year 2020.
If Elias were to face John Cena at WrestleMania 36, he wouldn’t partake in a very long match. The 16-time champion would defeat Elias rather easily, and while, in theory, Elias can only be helped by getting in the ring with Cena, I’m not so sure how much help he’s getting if it’s a five-minute match. WrestleMania lasts a long time, there are bigger priority matches that need that time (such as Sasha Banks vs. Bayley), and a quick win for Cena does nothing for Elias.
In order for Elias to get a rub, he needs to at least be booked “better than expected”, since a win isn’t realistic. Given the way the WrestleMania card is structured and this match’s standing as more of a “breather” match from the more intense bouts on the card, I’m not convinced a nondescript loss at WrestleMania helps Elias sufficiently enough to justify a loss.
