WWE: It would be a surprise if Drew McIntyre doesn’t win the title in the main event
Branded as “The Chosen One” and a future world champion when he re-debuted in WWE in 2009, Drew McIntyre is on the precipice of winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36 against Brock Lesnar.
Although Drew McIntyre’s Royal Rumble win didn’t necessarily come out of nowhere, few saw him eliminating both Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns to punch his ticket to WWE WrestleMania 36. There’s no guarantee McIntyre main events the show against Lesnar now that Reigns vs. Goldberg seems to be in the works for the Universal Championship, but all signs point to the former NXT Champion getting his wish.
There’s also no guarantee that McIntyre beats Lesnar, who lost to Seth Rollins at both WrestleMania and SummerSlam last year. McIntyre defeating Lesnar would be the ideal outcome for most fans, as it would be an “all in” push for a wrestler who looked like a superstar during the Rumble match, especially when he Claymored the seemingly invincible Beast Incarnate straight over the top rope.
According to Sportskeeda’s Tom Colohue during Dropkick DiSKussions with Korey Gunz, Vince McMahon “is still determined” to have McIntyre win a world championship in WWE.
The reason makes all the world of sense based on what we assume about any promoter’s thought process. Since McMahon branded McIntyre as a future world champion nearly 10 years ago, he wants to prove that those words were indeed correct. Colohue further noted that McIntyre “was always going to be an immense success” in his second stint with the company after proving his star status on the independent scene.
McIntyre had a strong babyface run as NXT Champion, and while he’s had some stumbling blocks on the main roster, he’s managed to show “top star” upside when it matters most, such as during the Royal Rumble.
Even fans who were lukewarm on McIntyre are eager to see the redemption story be fulfilled at WrestleMania. It’s great to see wrestlers getting a chance to taste top star glory and have their hard work rewarded, and McIntyre’s promo skills and in-ring athleticism are examples of the tools he has.
Since Vince McMahon seems to be fully in his corner after all these years, the safe bet is on McIntyre winning the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania and advancing to a feud with Rollins, who also defeated Lesnar at WrestleMania.
If Vince is intent on McIntyre winning the title, it’s happening, and the best opportunity for it to happen is at WrestleMania 36. And in order to make McIntyre defeating Lesnar feel even more special than Rollins’ win last year, which was more about freeing the title to a full-time champion than a star-making win for Seth (already a star), expect it to happen in the main event.
