WWE WrestleMania 36: What if this is John Cena’s last match?
John Cena and The Fiend will have a marquee match at WWE WrestleMania 36, and there’s one wrestling legend who thinks this could be the 16-time champion’s final match.
Bray Wyatt hasn’t forgotten what happened to him at WrestleMania 30 when he faced John Cena. After a well-built rivalry, Wyatt lost to The Face That Runs The Place in a disappointing match, and while he got his revenge in 2017 when he pinned Cena before winning the WWE Title inside the Elimination Chamber, he won’t rest until he beats the icon at WWE WrestleMania 36.
There’s no doubt that Wyatt needs to win this match. The Fiend is already in a precarious position as a character after being fed to Goldberg at Super ShowDown in February, as Vince McMahon apparently wants Roman Reigns to beat Goldberg for the Universal Title at WrestleMania 36 instead of the originally-planned Wyatt.
But since that means Wyatt gets to relive his past rivalry with Cena at the Show of Shows this year, it could be all for the better. There’s no title on the line, but there doesn’t need to be a title on the line for Cena vs. Wyatt at WrestleMania to feel like a special match on a loaded card.
It’s hard to even contemplate this match being Cena’s last, especially since it was only set into motion immediately after Super ShowDown.
However, WWE legend – and former Raw General Manager – Mick Foley thinks it could be Cena’s final match, judging by the 16-time champion’s promos.
Here’s what he said on The Wrestling Inc. Daily:
"“[Laughs] I wasn’t happy with it, but The Fiend is not someone who needs a title to define him. It’s gonna be very interesting and I think it adds another huge match as John Cena gave an impassioned promo and it leads me to believe this will be his final match. I would not be surprised to see The Fiend come out of Mania stronger than ever.”"
We’ve seen Cena tease uncertainty about his future before. Remember in late 2017 and early 2018 when he had something of a mid-life crisis before calling out The Undertaker for a match at WrestleMania 34? Cena lost to Roman Reigns – the new top star – at No Mercy and then looked dejected when he was eliminated from the Elimination Chamber in 2018. And yes, that was the match Reigns won to eventually main event the Show of Shows against Universal Champion Brock Lesnar.
Cena won’t be in the main event of WWE WrestleMania 36 this year, but he’s more than content to take a back seat. He’s away from the title matches, yet he’s still in the spotlight on the back of what he’s accomplished in wrestling over the years. That gives him the opportunity to put over other stars in a huge way, and he’s reportedly ready to put over Wyatt in a stronger way than he did three years ago inside the chamber.
For the record, I don’t see it happening. But there’s no stronger way of putting someone over than leaving – even if it doesn’t end up being permanent, as “goodbyes” are rarely ever truly “goodbyes” in pro wrestling – after they defeat you. Now that Foley has put it out there, it’s a notion worth entertaining.
