Becky Lynch is absolutely right about Shayna Baszler
WWE Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch always speaks the truth, and she is right about Shayna Baszler. The Queen of Spades has more to prove than Ronda Rousey.
Last year at this time, Becky Lynch was preparing for the fight of her life. She defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair – two of the biggest stars in professional wrestling – to become the TOP star in WWE, winning two women’s championships in the first ever women’s main event of WrestleMania.
Now this year, Becky is the star of the show. Her Raw Women’s Championship match against Shayna Baszler will be one of the biggest matches at the Show of Shows, whenever WrestleMania ends up taking place. She and Shayna have taken center stage on Raw amidst a variety of big-ticket feuds, such as Edge vs. Randy Orton, and Becky will always hold up her end.
But it takes two to create a classic. Some fans doubt that Shayna, who has been (fairly or not) criticized by some as being boring. Baszler has faced backlash for being booked too strongly. Not only did she beat Bianca Belair twice and run through other credible challengers like Mia Yim, but she also dominated the whole Raw Women’s Division inside the Elimination Chamber this month.
As former MMA stars in the same “faction” (the Four Horsewomen of MMA) who have been in title feuds with Lynch, Baszler and Ronda Rousey will draw comparisons. And Becky is the one drawing the comparison right now, except she feels that Baszler faces more pressure than the former UFC megastar.
And you know what? Becky is absolutely right, as per usual.
Here’s what she told TV Insider’s Scott Fishman:
"“It’s a different animal with Shayna Baszler. The thing about Shayna is whatever you want to say about it, she has been wrestling longer. She is the one who got Ronda into wrestling because she was such a huge fan. We also haven’t seen what she can truly do on Raw. We’ve seen it on NXT. It’s a whole new kettle of fish up on Raw. Ronda is an anomaly. She came in and had this background and pedigree and a worldwide star. We all knew what she was capable of. Shayna is a little less well-known, but I think in that realm she had a lot more to prove. Like I said in my promo on Monday, she is looking to rewrite history because normal people like me don’t beat trained killers like Ronda. But I did, and I will again. I think she is looking to change that. So she is looking to come in as vicious as she possibly can.”"
It’s kind of wild to think that a two-time NXT Women’s Champion – the ONLY two-time NXT Women’s Champion, I might add – has more to prove than someone who had less experience in professional wrestling heading into their marquee WrestleMania feud.
However, Baszler’s past success is exactly what puts her in this position. After the poorly-received Survivor Series main event, which led to online criticism directed at Baszler, and her huge run in NXT, fans already had The Queen of Spades under a microscope. And after what happened at the Elimination Chamber, the target on Baszler’s back has only grown.
Baszler has to prove to skeptical WWE fans that she is as good as her booking says she is. She has to prove to the critics that she isn’t boring. She has to prove that for as long as she’s been in this business, she’s more than just a “former MMA star”.
And I don’t doubt her for one second. She made people eat crow before her first reign as NXT Women’s Champion, and she has the talent to hold her own with Becky Lynch in a WrestleMania rivalry. It’s just on her to put it all together at the right time and make this another marquee feud worth remembering – one that elevates the Raw Women’s Championship to even greater heights.
